Description
Finnish artist Ilmari Sysimetsa (1912-1955) created this striking, graphic poster for the 1952 Summer Olympics. The Olympics themselves had a troubled history: initially given to Japan in 1940, they were rescheduled to Helsinki before being cancelled altogether due to the outbreak of WWII. It wasn’t until 1952 that the Olympics finally took place in Helsinki.
