Description

On 24 May 1962 Bacon had his first retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery which comprised ninety-two paintings. The Times’ art critic heralds Bacon’s show as “the most brilliant exhibition by a British living artist since the war”. This rare poster marks this historic moment in Bacon’s illustrious career.

The poster features Bacon’s painting ‘Head VI’ – one of a series of paintings of popes created by the artist. ‘Head VI’ is recognised as one of Bacon’s greatest masterpieces, one that retains its power to unsettle the viewer even today. (Arts Council Collection)
