Description

The original poster designed by David Hockney for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera’s exhibition of costumes, set designs and related material held at the City Art Galleries in Manchester and Bristol in 1975. The exhibition included designs by Hockney for the Opera’s production of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress.

Hockney’s masterful, modern designs perfectly captured the spirit of the three-act opera, which itself was inspired by William Hogarth’s famous series of 18th century paintings and prints, A Rake’s Progress.

For this playful poster, Hockney incorporated the famous cross-hatch etchings that adorned the sets and costumes of the opera production. The lettering is spaced alongside theatrical masks to suggest a musical score.
